The Demidov family were great for over two centuries, notably for great wealth and power derived from steel and weapons manufacture.
In the early 18th century Nikita was a favorite of Peter the Great for his skill in weapons manufacture. His son Afinkiy expanded the steel and iron empire and added various precious mines. He built the Nevyansk Tower, which features on one of our tours. He was known for being very tough and had significant power with the Czar’s blessing. During this time the Demidov family were considered the second most powerful after the Royal Family. Afinkiy was the second richest man in the country after the Czar, with 25 steel foundries and many mines across the country.
As with other noble and wealthy families in Russia, they vanished after the 1917 Revolution. Some descendants were in Finland and other European countries.
